Christian Baker

IT Architect & Renewable Energy Specialist · Paris, France

I've spent 25 years building and delivering complex technology systems across Europe. In 2021, I went back to university to study sustainable energy. The two threads are now inseparable. This is the longer version of who I am.

Professional Background

Twenty-five years of enterprise IT architecture and project delivery across Europe and beyond have shaped a particular way of thinking about complex systems: how they fail, how they scale, and how to bring them to life across organisations spanning cultures, languages, and time zones. The work has covered cloud infrastructure, ERP implementations, systems integration, data architecture, and large-scale programme management.

Since 2005, that work has been carried out independently, with clients including Marie Brizard, Republic Cement, Cromwell Property Management, Statoil (now Equinor), Li & Fung, Pernod Ricard, Veolia Water, and IPSOS. The technical foundation is Oracle and JDEdwards ERP, with deep experience in cloud migration (OCI, AWS), REST API integration, and database architecture.

A dual British-French national, based in Paris for over twenty years, working fluently in English and French.

Renewable Energy & Cybersecurity

In 2021, alongside consulting work, the MSc in Sustainable Energy Provision and Demand Management at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales became the next chapter. The degree was completed in 2025 with a Merit, covering smart grids, demand management, low-carbon technologies, energy economics, and environmental policy.

The dissertation examined cybersecurity risks in grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across French and UK energy markets — a subject sitting at the intersection of two of the most pressing challenges of our time: the clean energy transition and the security of critical infrastructure. It was awarded a Distinction.

Formal cybersecurity credentials complement the energy work, and an active GitHub portfolio applies AI, data analysis, and application development to renewable energy and security challenges — bringing the same systems-thinking used in enterprise IT to the demands of the energy transition.

Beyond the Work

Cycling is a serious pursuit — regularly, in Paris and further afield — and an ongoing advocacy for cycling infrastructure as a meaningful response to urban transport challenges. The bicycle may be the most underrated policy tool available to city governments.

Reading is the other constant: detective fiction above all, but also history, politics, and books that complicate things previously thought settled. All of it feeds into the blog, alongside the technical and professional writing.
